Disgruntled Juventus and Genoa fans have reportedly requested refunds after it emerged Cristiano Ronaldo would be rested for Sunday’s Serie A clash.

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri announced in advance of the match that Ronaldo would not be making the trip to the Marassi following his midweek Champions League heroics against Atletico Madrid.

And, according to the Corriere della Sera newspaper, this prompted an influx of calls to the Genoa ticket office requesting refunds on tickets bought in advance.

While many of the requests came from Juventus supporters, it appears a number of locals had bought tickets purely to see the Portuguese star in action.

Ronaldo scored a hat-trick on Tuesday night to inspire Juventus from a two-goal first leg deficit into the quarter-finals, where they will face Ajax.

Juventus will attempt to extend their commanding 18-point advantage over Napoli at the top of Serie A with victory over 13th-placed Genoa.

Allegri dismissed suggestions Ronaldo was being sanctioned for mimicking the ‘cojones’ celebration performed by Atletico manager Diego Simeone following the first leg.

He said: ‘Ronaldo disqualified? Absolute not. Everybody on Tuesday, in the stands or on the pitch, performed a different celebration.

‘He will play two matches with the national team, risking him against Genoa would therefore not make sense and it is better that he rests.’

Ronaldo is likely to play a part in Portugal’s opening two Euro 2020 qualifiers, against Ukraine on Friday and Serbia the following Monday.
