Secondary school teachers to go on strike on July, 2013

The 3,500 teachers of the Union of Private Secondary Education Employees (UPSEE) will be on strike on Friday 5 July 2013. This was announced by Yahya Paraooty, the union leader on Thursday. He added that there is no willingness from the Ministry of Education to address the problems in the private sector.

The demands of the UPSEE include improving the working conditions of teachers in Mauritius and Rodrigues, the abolition of national examinations in Form 3 and the setting up of a program of study for students who repeat the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) and admitted in Prevoc in college.

On the day of the strike, teachers will be at the workplace to sign the attendance register but they will stay in the staff room or in the school yard. No student will be penalised since no examinations is scheduled on that day.
