British Doctor Drowns in Grand Baie lagoon

Richard John Madeley, a 65-year-old British doctor has drowned in the lagoon in front of Merville Hotel, Grand Baie yesterday morning. The tragedy took place just 24 hours after he had arrived in Mauritius with his wife. It is a security officer of Merville Beach Hotel who noticed a corpse floating in the lagoon.

He immediately alerted the boat house and the National Coast Guard. A team from Merville hotel was rushed at 300m from the beach to bring the tourist back on the shore. All efforts to reanimate the British man by doctors present were not successful. Dr Sudesh Kumar Gungadin, the chief police medical officer attributed the cause of the death to asphyxia due to drowning.

The police of Grand Baie has started an investigation on this drowning case. The British man and his family should have left Mauritius on the 15th March 2012.

Death caused by drowning in Mauritius lagoons continues to rise unfortunately.
