Free Wi-Fi Zone: Contract of Rs 10 Million allocated to DCL
The contract for the setting up of the Wi-Fi antennas in the five municipalities, the four District councils and in Rodrigues Island has been allocated to the company, Data Communication Limited ( DCL ). According to the Minister of Information and Communication Technology, the total amount of the contract allocated last Thursday, 19 January 2012 to Data Communications Ltd ( DCL ) is at Rs 10 Million. During the presentation of the project, in August 2011, the installation costs were estimated at Rs 5,2 Million and an additional Rs 10,000 monthly for the maintenance of each Wi-Fi zone.
The Wi-Fi project which should have started in December 2011 was scheduled to begin on Tuesday, 24 January 2012 with the installation of the Wi-Fi antennas. This was the wish of the Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Tassarajen Pillay Chedumbrum on Friday 20th January 2012.
According to the Minister, the public zones which will be equipped with Free Wi-Fi will be operational between the end of February and the start of March 2012. Tassarajen Pillay Chedumbrum also demands the private sector to continue to provide free Wi-Fi zones. There are some commercial centres such as the Bagatelle, Mall of Mauritius and Le Caudan Waterfront who already provide free Wi-Fi corners. There are some restaurants such as Mc Donald for example which propose free Wi-Fi in their food court. Rose Hill transport is the public transport company which provides free Wi-Fi in their buses.
The DCL company was founded in 1997, the company provides services for enterprises and professionals in the Information Technology sector. The products which DCL proposes during its launch were phones, internet, the sale of IT products etc. The president of the DCL is Ganesh Ramalingum.
In 2001, the DCL obtained from the Information and Communications Technology Authority ( ICTA ) its license to provide internet services ( ISP )
