Ghazal King Jagjit Singh Dies At 70 – 10 October 2011
Famous Indian singer Jagjit Singh passed away in Mumbai city today, he was 70 years old.
Mr Jagjit Singh who bacame very famous for his semi-classical ghazal songs, was affected from a stroke last month and had been in a coma in hospital since then.
Popularly known as the “Ghazal King”, the talented Jagjit Singh sang in a number of languages.
He is survived by his wife, Chitra Singh, who is also a popular ghazal singer. They had commercial success with songs recorded together in the 1970s and 1980s.
Jagjit Singh’s fans said that he changed ghazal music and made it accessible to many people.
He also composed the songs for a number of famous hit movies, Sarfarosh was the most successful movie.
He was the first prominent ghazal singer from India in a genre where there were many Pakistani singers.
“He was the first real ghazal singer from India. Before him there were clones. The poetry in his music was beautiful,” actor Anupam Kher said in a tribute.
“Jagjit Singh music was gentle, soothing and went to your heart.”
Ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas said that Singh had made ghazal so accessible that his audiences “could sing along with him”.
Jagjit Singh recorded more than 50 albums, many of them were big hits.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said in his condolence message that Jagjit Singh made ghazals accessible to everyone, he also gave joy and pleasure to millions of music lovers in India and foreigners. He was blessed with a marvellous voice.
