Kailash Purryag sworn in as new President of Mauritius

Kailash Purryag became the fifth president of the Republic of Mauritius when he was sworn into the largely ceremonial yesterday. There was a large crowd present at the State House to assist the ceremony. Mr Rajkeshwur Purryag was elected on Friday during a special parliamentary session which members of the MMM and MSM preferred to boycot. SirAnerood Jugnauth resigned in March following open conflict with Prime Minister Navin Chandra Ramgoolam.
Kailash Purryag who was still the Speaker of the National Assembly a few days back became the fifth president of Mauritius on Saturday, July 21st.
Purryag, an attorney by training has been actively involved in politics for 36 years, holding several ministerial positions as well as acting as deputy prime minister. He became speaker of parliament in 2005.
Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam was furious when he arrived at the State House yesterday, the reason was the decision to stop all vehicles 10 meters from the red carpet which compelled all the guests to walk to the entrance of the château du Réduit.
