Medine-Camp-de-Masque: Woman swept away by current while doing the laundry

10-year-old Sekina watched desperately her mother, Nanditee Toolooa, swept by the current. The housewife, aged 30, fell in the stream at Medine-Camp-de-Masque, Sunday afternoon, while doing the laundry. Her body was found on that day itself in the neighbouring village.
Sekina, the eldest of the three siblings, said that her mother decided to do the laundry in the stream that crosses the sugarcane field on Sunday afternoon. It is dubbed as «kanal beton» by the villagers. The lady was accompanied by Sekina and her brother and sister, aged four and three respectively. Sekina was helping her mother put the clothes to dry on the sugarcane. The incident took place when the young woman tried to pick up the soap which fell into the water. “Linn glise, linn tombe ek delo la inn koumans amen li. Mo pann kapav fer naryen”, explained Sekina. Thus, she ran towards the residential area and cried for help, and fortunately on the way, she met two neighbours who alerted the other villagers, but it was already too late. Roberto Legrand, Nanditee Toolooa’s partner and the father of the two younger children said that he saw his partner heading towards the stream earlier, around 1.00 p.m., with a bucket full of clothes.
“I told her that it’s dangerous to go there, but she insisted, saying that the children will be with her”, he whispered in distress. Moreover, her partner, Roberto Legrand, said that she did not go to the stream too often to do the laundry. Tonia Legrand, the victim’s sister-in-law, also said that she had no doubt that Nanditee Toolooa went to wash the sheets «avek gran delo» as at her place, she had only a small «ros lave». Still shocked, Roberto Legrand said that they were both planning to build their house, after being together for 6 years.
