Ministry encourages farmers to set up biogas plants
Farm animals waste can cause serious health problem and is an environment concern.
According to the the Ministry of Agro Industry and Food security and the Agricultural Research and Extension Unit (AREU), waste produced by livestock can contaminate both surface and ground water.
Minister Faugoo said that methods of livestock waste treatments include composting mainly for solid wastes and treatment for liquid/solid manure using biogas plants which farmers can set up to protect the environment.
In Mauritius, the majority of small holder farms stack livestock waste in the open without prior treatment, thereby constituting serious rick of environment pollution.
