The women’s wing of the Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM) hosted a press conference on Monday at Saint George Hotel, Port Louis to lay emphasis on the increasing suicide rate among the youth and children. Lysie Ribot and Françoise Labelle request the creation of a committee including representatives from various ministries to reflect on the issue.

The two main presenters shared their insights on the phenomenon of youth suicide. They claimed that it is the duty of the state to help the youth and families who are facing emotional distress.

The Chairperson, Lysie Ribot, announced that a document will be submitted to the Prime Minister and relevant ministries on Tuesday, June 26, 2012, to explain the requests. She argues that a coherent policy and prevention programs have become an urgent priority given the increasing suicide rate among the youth.

Lysie Ribot also requested the media to implement the recommendations of World Health Organization regarding the treatment of suicide cases. The UN body recommends restraint while revealing information on these tragic acts.

MP Françoise Labelle evoked the need for prevention programs at different levels with the active involvement of the state.

“The state is responsible for taking political decisions to prevent youth suicide.” says Françoise Labelle.

The MMM women’s wing sharply criticized the minister of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare, Mireille Martin for her answer to a parliamentary question from the opposition on this phenomenon. Lysie Ribot and Françoise Labelle argued that the latter has been irresponsible as she answered these questions casually at the National Assembly.
