Online dating was not too common ten years back, but nowadays it is the latest craze of Mauritians looking to find their soul-mate. Facebook, badoo, twitter, MSN, Skype are some of the means people look for a date. Unfortunately, online dating can also cause a lot of problems.

Sheeka.D has just had her dinner after a tiring day at work, she is now browsing through her facebook reading about the different wall posts concerning her friends. She then gets a notification from Deepak who has added her. Sheeka browses the guy’s profile, since he appears quite interesting, Sheeka does not think twice before adding her. This is the start of a long virtual relationship for Deepak and Sheeka, they chat a lot and ended up liking each other.

Arranged marriage is very rare now, social networks have completely changed the way people search for their soulmates. Ten years back, meeting someone required a lot of time and courage, nowadays this is done in only a few clicks, we can now flirt, fall in love in just a few minutes sitting in front of the computer. Online dating is fast becoming the latest craze all around the world.

Mark.T, a 35 year old engineer from Accenture tells us that he does not need to go out to meet girls, i meet them everyday on Facebook. I can admit that an online relationship is exciting and passionate. In just a few clicks, we can find out about all the information of the other person, his/her likes, hobbies, interests and know about the person’s character.

Priya, a 21-year-old student at UOM says that online dating allows us to know the person properly before taking the next big step ( marriage ), we can know everything about him before.

Does Online Dating encourage infidelity?

Infidelity existed was present in all cultures well before Internet existed, but online dating has made cheating more easy. Many married people who are in Facebook happen to see someone with whom they are attracted and because they are not single, they maintain a virtual relationship with the person instead. Online dating is the main cause of cheating nowadays, it has broken a lot of marriages and made a lot of children suffer.

Facebook, the social network with nearly 1 billion users is surely full of perverts, old people hiding about their age and photo, lying in order to get a victim.

Online dating also reserves a lot of surprises. According to Jemma, student at UTM, she had a relationship with a guy for several weeks but when she met him, the guy did not please her, he was not looking the same as in his photos. Vikash, a carpenter also tells us that he was disappointed when he met his friend from Facebook, there are some people who pretends a lot on social network.

Jessy Marie, a 30-year-old web designer tells us that she met her husband on HI5 ( once the most social network, before facebook existed ) seven years back, they are now happily together with two children. She says that online dating can work, it is is not good to say that there are only disadvantages with online dating. We need to make sure to know the person well before meeting up otherwise a lot of problems can take place.

Molamour.mu is a Mauritian dating website set up by Portuguese businessman José Esteves last year, the website has more than 10,000 users and many people visit it daily to look for love or flirt. Molamour.mu did a lot of advertising through billboards and radio initially to promote the website.
