Monkey trade from Mauritius

Mauritius is the second largest exporter of monkeys for the research industry with 10,000 sold to the United States and the European Union especially the UK, France and Spain.

A petition has been launched on Avaaz website against the trade of monkeys from Mauritius. The petition titled Stop the cruel Mauritius monkey trade! is calling out to the Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam to put to an end to the “cruel” trade of monkeys which they qualify as “senseless massacre”.

More than 8,000 people have already signed the petition targeting 1 million votes. Animal activist group British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) discovered about the monkey trade and brought it to the international stage. According to BUAV, hundreds of of monkeys were massacred and even the pregnant and young were not spared.

BUAV also exposed the deplorable breeding conditions of the monkeys in the international laboratories. The petition can be signed at http://petition.avaaz.org/en/petition/Stop_the_cruel_Mauritius_monkey_trade_4/
