Soodursun Jugessur: “Neil Garrod refused the vice-chancellor post because of the Press”
The pro-chancellor of UoM, Soodursun Jugessur believes that it is after the articles published in local newspapers that the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Greenwich University decided to refuse the post vacated by Konrad Morgan.
“It is mainly because of the press that Neil Garrod decided to refuse the post of vice-chancellor at the University of Mauritius, the pro-chancellor of UoM Soodursun Jugessur said. The latter responded to a press release issued by the Deputy Vice Chancellor from the University of Greenwich, Neil Garrod. He clarified the reasons which pushed him to renounce the vice-chancellor post.
Neil Garrod was surprised on knowing that his discussions with UoM’s management have been divulged. He even came across certain discussions about him on the Internet. He also said that it is the first time in his career that his professional negotiations have been revealed to the public.
Nevertheless, it must be highlighted that the press articles were only referring to the ones who opposed against the eventual nomination of a foreigner. The Students’ Union was part of those who preferred a Mauritian at the head of the institution.
However, Soodursun Jugessur remains categorical: if the press had not interfered in the university’s matters, Neil Garrod would have certainly agreed to be the successor of Konrad Morgan.
