Statistics Mauritius published its annual report on the Information Communication and Technology, (ICT) sector on Wednesday. According to the report, the number of Internet subscribers has increased by 30%, from 284 000 in 2010 to 370 000 in 2011.

6.1% of Mauritian households has a fixed phone line, 88% possess a mobile phone, 96% a Television, 37.5% a Personal Computer and 27.9% have a internet access.

The usage of IT in the business sector must be noted: 99.6% of big companies have a Computer compared to 98.4% in 2010, 53.9% have a website in 2011 compared to 50.2% in 2010, 96.5% have internet access compared to 92.7% in 2010, 37.9% take online orders compared to 36.1% in 2010.

The number of fixed phone lines have decreased by 3.4%, from 387,000 in 2010 to 374,600 in 2011. 440.3 million calls were registered in 2011 (Rs 1 Billion) compared to 422 Million in 2010.

The total mobile phone subscriber base grew by 8.7%, from 1.19 million to 1.29 million between 2010 and 2011. 1.2. 1.2 Billion calls were made through mobile phones.

1.27 Billion SMS sent

8 in 10 local calls registered in 2011 comes from mobile phones. The number of SMS sent grew from 6.7%, 1.27 Billion SMS were sent compared to 1.2 in 2010.

370,000 Internet Subscribers

There were 370,000 subscribers registered in 2011. 236,800 are subscribed by mobile phone and 133,200 of them are local fixed line subscription. There are 279,800 subscribers to high speed internet.

According to the ICT report, the quality of internet access has improved considerably.
