Tragic Saturday: One dead, four injured from road accidents
Four serious road accidents have been recorded on Saturday, the 5th May 2012. The one that occurred on the evening of Saturday at Curepipe around 22 h 15 remains the most tragic, resulting in the death of a young man of 22 years old.
According to police report, Ludovic Samuel John, a mason of 22 years and resident of Floreal, was walking along the Sivananda street at Curepipe, when he was severely hit by a chauffeur-driven car. The young man died instantly. An autopsy performed by the Medical Officer Police attributed his death to “shock due to multiple injuries”. The driver of the car, a 20 year old student, resident of Curepipe, was tested negative to an alcohol test. He is expected to appear in court on a provisional charge of involuntary homicide.
In Plaine Verte, around 4:00 p.m. Saturday, a local resident aged 53 was hit by a motorcycle while crossing the SSR Street. He was immediately taken to hospital Jeetoo, where he was admitted to the ICU. For his part, the motorcyclist, aged 42 and cleaner by profession was slightly injured and has been tested negative to breath test.
Almost simultaneously in Souillac, a 17 year old girl who was going to Krishna Mundir for prayers was hit by a car. The girl was crossing the road on the main street of the region when a car with four young people on board, overtook three vehicles before hitting her with a great impact.
Sokanah Pentiah, one of the witnesses of the whole scene, said he was about to set footin the mandir when he heard the screams of the teenager. When he returned, the girl was already on the ground. “Inn lev li, inn pil li. Monn dir fini,” said another witness. The girl was urgently transported to the hospital of Souillac before being transferred to the hospital of Rose-Belle. Her condition remains serious, she is wounded on the head and spine.
According to the witness, an accident of this kind was predictable given that the road was repaved but the retarder also used as a crosswalk has not been subject to any repavement. Sokanah Pentiah adds that consequently, at a distance, the drivers do not notice the speed bump. Mr. Pentiah did not fail to note that two months ago he alerted the Road Development Authority (RDA) for the situation to be remedied. “Mone sonn RDA, zot dir oui me ziska zordi zero,” he said
Some time later, at about 17 hours, another accident occurred on the highway at Midlands. The first information available on the evening of Saturday indicated that a 15-seat van went out of control and hit an electricity pylon of concrete. The shock made two casualties: the driver and one passenger. The first rescuers on the scene have encountered some difficulties to extricate the driver of the vehicle, as he had his foot stuck. It took the intervention of firefighters. The two injured were taken at the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital of Rose Belle.
