A lecturer at the University of Mauritius (UoM) found a cockroach in a sandwich she ordered on Tuesday at the UoM cafeteria. She discovered the insect, after eating half of the sandwich and the case was then immediately reported to the Ministry of Health.
“I bought a vegetarian sandwich at the cafeteria. I had already eaten half of it when i heard a strange noise and a foul smell. I immediately spit it in the paper bag and to my astonishment and disgust, i saw a piece of cockroach in the paper bag. This was enough and i did not check if there was the other half in the bread,” the lecturer, a resident of Port Louis said.
The incident has since then sparked concerns over the procedures for the management of food and hygiene in the UoM cafeteria.
The bread has been sent to the laboratory for further analysis.
